Physicians and doctors will often contact a clinical laboratory to have tests run on biological specimens in order to get information about the health of a patient. Clinical laboratories usually have the resources to run tests in a variety of disciplines including microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry. In order to have tests run, the physician or doctor will usually take a biological sample (usually either blood, serum, or skin cells) and send it to the laboratory for testing. Depending on the condition of the patient, the doctor will then specify which tests need to be run. Once the tests have been run, the information will then be sent back to the hospital for the doctor's use.
